Windsurfing Holidays in Lanzarote (Costa Teguise), Spain
Playa Las Cucharas in Costa Teguise is by far the most popular spot for windsurfing in Lanzarote. Surrounding the beach are many shops, bars, restaurants and surf and windsurf shops. The start point in Las Cucharas Bay is a little sheltered from the wind. Navigating to the outer windy areas can be tricky in the gusty winds. Once outside the bay, there are excellent solid winds and a large wave.
The winds in the Canary Islands usually blow from the northeast (NE). They're caused by differences in air pressure: high pressure over the Azores and low pressure over the Sahara. This happens mainly from April to September, with the steadiest winds in June, July, and August. The water temperature ranges from 18º to 24º degrees Celsius, with the hottest months being September, October, and November. Air temperatures range from 17º to 30º degrees Celsius.
When the NE trade winds blow, it comes from the left at Las Cucharas beach, making it better for beginners because it's sheltered. For intermediate windsurfers, it's just right, and for experts, it's more challenging closer to the reef. It picks up and shifts side-onshore, reaching its peak between noon and 6:00 PM, which is better for advanced riders. This wind pattern also creates different wave conditions: mornings and late afternoons are great for riding waves, while the middle of the day is best for big jumps. The launch area is sandy, with a marked channel for getting in and out safely.
