Northern Mauritius

The Northern area of Mauritius has a large number of hotels, from small boutique hotels and apartments, up to some of the larger luxury beach resorts. The North Western side, especially around Grand Baie, is the liveliest part of Mauritius being the center of nightlife and shopping.

The main areas of Northern Mauritius are:

Grand Baie - The center of tourism in Mauritius with a number of cafes, nightclubs, and shops. A large number of hotels to fit all budgets, with a number of great value modern beachfront apartments as well as a number of new (or recently renovated) luxury beach resorts. In Grand Baie there are a lot of your more typical tourist activities like jetski, wakeboarding, and boat trips.

Troux Au Biches - just south of Grand Baie this area has a number of the more luxury hotels and is also where you access some of the best wreck dives in Mauritius. This is a quieter area but within easy reach of Grand Baie for eating out and nightlife.

Anse Le Raie - Right on the North tip of Mauritius Anse Le Raie has a rugged coastline dotted with beautiful coves and small beaches. This part of Mauritius has some superb kitesurfing and is especially good for kite foiling (best if you can already foil). The scenery from the water is stunning! For Scuba Divers this is also one of the very best areas with direct access to some fantastic drop-offs and drift diving at the offshore islands. Anse La Raie is a great holiday alternative to the busy, more well-known spots in Mauritius. This area of the island offers uncrowded beaches while still providing easy access to a wide array of amenities, shopping and nightlife.

Kitesurfing Holidays in Northern Mauritius, Mauritius

The northern tip of Mauritius has some great kitesurfing if you can already kitesurf independently, with its main attraction being the stunning scenery from the water as well as being far less crowded in high season than the better-known spot in the South (such as the famous Le Morne area). The outer reef belt in this part of northern Mauritius creates a vast lagoon reaching almost 2.5km from the shoreline. The water in this lagoon is not shallow but protected from the waves by the reef, so creating a vast flat water playground. The wind is generally side/onshore by the kitesurf beach and is one of the strongest wind sports on the island.

Although the main kite lagoon is huge, the launch is from a relatively small bay, with some rocky areas and a small island to navigate. For this reason, we suggest this part of Mauritius is best for those who can already kitesurf independently, and it is also a fantastic place to kite foil! If you want to learn to kitesurf this can also be OK, but it is not very suitable for improver kiters who want to practice without an instructor.

Kitesurfing Lessons with a personal instructor gives you the opportunity to have a 2-on-1 interaction with your instructor to help you learn at a pace that is driven by you. The Learn To Kitesurf course aims to get you riding, while also teaching you how to read the conditions and utilise your equipment safely and correctly.

You will start with the basics; this includes setup of your equipment, safety features that you will utilise and how to fly a small 2metre trainer kite. When your instructor feels you are ready you can then head to the water. On day one you will only be using the kite and not go on the board just yet. Entering the water is when the fun starts! Here you will be taught how to properly fly an inflatable kitesurfing kite, how to control your kite and what to do if you crash it in the water. On day one you will be comfortable flying the kite and know what to do in any situation.

The range of equipment will vary from each different kitesurf school, so sometimes the exact kite size may not be available. Kitesurf rental packages are great if you want to experiment with different types of equipment before you decide to invest in your own, or if you just don't want toe hassle of taking your own equipment.
