Learn To Kitesurf Holiday

It is important to get to the to the right location for the time of year you are looking to travel to maximise your 'water time'. Some locations will make your kitesurfing progression much faster, but even in more challenging locations it can teach you better kite skills; although it can make the process more frustrating! If you are not sure about the best location to learn to kitesurf just call us and speak to a kitesurf travel expert; we are all kitesurfers here, and we have been to all the destinations that we offer, so you can be sure of the best advice.

It is also important to know that Adventrus only work with the very best kitesurf school on the world; be don't work with just anyone.

How it works

The duration of your kitesurf course will depend a bit on the instructor to student ratio, and the conditions. The beginner course is normally 3 to 4 days with a 3-hour session each day. If the budget allows and you really want to 'nail it' then private lessons are the way to go. Group lessons often mean sharing equipment and so they are far less intensive. However, group lesson are a lot of fun and very sociable. It is also good to watch other practice as you will learn a lot form watching as well.

If the conditions are easy (for example a shallow flat water lagoon, which is perfect) at the end of a 9-12 hour course you should be just about on the board and perhaps doing short runs, normally followed by some spectacular face plants! At this stage the instructor will make some recommendations on how to proceed; maybe some more instruction is needed, or if you have done well, supervised rental to practice. This will also vert much depend on the location, always putting safety first.

Improver kitesurfing lessons will allow for faster progression through intensive tuition. We highly recommend one on one private lessons for improvers as that way, every session will be tailored to your exact kiting level with techniques focussed specifically on how to progress your skills to the next stage. Full equipment can be included, which can give you a chance to try out different kites, boards, and bars, before investing in your own, or you can decide to use your own equipment for your improver lessons.

Improver lessons are the fastest way to learn to go upwind, improve your skills, enter into the world of wave kiting, or master a specific trick or move. Through doing lessons with a skilled instructor you can rest easy knowing that help is always close at hand and that you are safe.

Holidays for independent kitesurfers

If you are going to be travelling around to different kitesurf spots in your destination then this is not necessary. If you are planning to kitesurf at the main kite beach where the kitesurf school is located, it is high recommended to take out this package in advance.

It is important that you are at an independent kiting level, this is not an unlimited kitesurf rescue service. Generally 2 or 3 rescues are OK, but if they start to get too many the school may suggest lessons, and / or charge for extra rescue.

On check-in to the kitesurf school you will be allocated a locker to store your equipment and then given a briefing about the kitesurfing spot. Most kitesurf schools also have compressor lines to inflate your kite, which is always nice to have. The staff will assist with launching and landing your kite. You may be given a bright lycra to wear so they can easily spot you on the water in case a rescue to needed.

The storage service will mean you can easily change your equipment between sessions, knowing you gear will always be looked after whilst you are on the water. Also, if you have to pay for an individual rescue outside of this package, it can get expensive with some school charging around USD 75+ / Euro 50+ per rescue!

Some kitesurf schools will also include trips to other kite beaches as part of the package. This is not only a great way to try a different kite spot, but it is a good way to meet other kiters and feel part of the club.

Holidays with kitesurf rental

Daily (or sometimes hourly) kitesurf equipment rental packages generally include use of a range of kite and board sizes and styles, plus bars and harness. You can swap your kite sizes and board sizes at anytime. You will need to follow the rules of the kitesurf centre and local kitesurf spot, which generally include:

  • - returning the equipment before the kitesurf school closes
  • - being responsible to pay for the repair (or replacement) of any damaged equipment (unless you have taken insurance with the centre)
  • - you will be asked to sign a liability release in case of injury

We recommend you have insurance that cover the damage in rental sport equipment if possible. Many kitesurf centres will offer an insurance for this purpose which we suggest taking.

Learn to kite foil holidays

Kite foiling, also known as foilboarding, hydrofoil kiteboarding, foil kitesurfing, is not as complicated as it sounds. It’s simply kiteboarding with the addition of a hydrofoil under the board. The foil allows you to kite along above the surface of the water. Kite foiling is speedier, as the foil cuts through the water with minimal drag. Foil fans love the quiet experience of riding along elevated above the surface of the water. You can have a smooth ride, even when it’s choppy out.

The hydrofoil itself is not a new invention. The technology has been around lifting boats since the early 1900s. Kite foiling has been around since the beginning of kitesurfing’s short history, but has become very popular in the last few years.

How does a hydrofoil work?

Without getting too deep into the physics of it, a hydrofoil is shaped in such a way that water rushing through it gives it upward lift. bWhile this looks crazy and futuristic, it’s the same technology that gives aeroplanes lift. A plane’s wings are curved and tilted so that air passes over it faster than under it. This causes a decrease in pressure of the air above the wing, and, as a result of the pressure difference, upward lift is generated. The plane can take off or move higher in the air. This relies on Bernoulli’s principle in fluid dynamics, which states this counterintuitive pressure/speed relationship. In a hydrofoil, the same thing is happening, only in water. The hydrofoil cuts the water and forces water to flow faster over the foil than under it, causing the pressure change that gives your boat or board lift out of the water. The faster you go, the more lift the foil generates.
For foil kiters, this translates to a water start where you begin to levitate as you gain speed and the foil works its lift magic. It’s a pretty crazy sensation. Some even say it feels like flying.

Kite foiling takes a bit of learning, even if you’re a good kiter. Be patient and commit to learning it as you would any other new thing. Expect to look like a beginner again and have some wipeouts. While you can ride a foil with straps, many recommend going strapless to avoid injuring yourself if the foil is diving down or behaving unpredictably. Beforehand, you might practice on a foil-less board strapless to gain confidence. You’ll need to put more weight in your front foot than you’re used to. As well as pushing with it, you need to lean your weight forward. It’s far better to nose-dive with a foil than have it jump up behind you. You also need to put pressure on your toes to keep the board flat. Try not to edge with your heels too much.

A great thing about foiling is that you can ride in light wind conditions. When you’re learning, though, it’s best to start with plenty of wind to keep your kite stable in the air, but don’t overpower yourself. Maybe take a kite size down from what you would normally take in that wind.
